Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
FIM holds observer status in CEN the European Standards Committee. We are monitoring the development of new standards for clothing that is sold to riders as personal protective equipment. (PPE). A new law – the PPE Regulation – will come into force in the European Union in 2018 and this will have an effect on the type of clothing that can be sold as, “motorcycling clothing.” As these products are also sold across the world this new EU law will affect the motorcycle market beyond Europe. FIM will also make a presentation at the 2018 European conference on PPE that is held every two years in January 2018 just ahead of the implementation of the new EU law in April 2018. A distinction exists between, “motorcycling clothing” and fashion garments that reference the motorcycling image but have no protective features. Of all the dossiers that FIM is working on this is the most complex.
