Automatic Headlights On campaign
AHO is a simple low cost safety technology fitted to all new motorcycles and scooters sold in the developed world. There is no “on/off” switch for the headlamp. Instead the headlamp lights up immediately the engine is started. A diode is fitted to the wiring so that there is no sudden electrical surge when the engine is started that would shorten the life of the bulb. The rider cannot switch the headlamp off when the engine is running.
Making the motorcycle or scooter with this design feature is less expensive than fitting a switch! In Europe this technology came in (first by voluntary action of the motorcycle industry, later by law) in 2003.
It is not standard across the whole world as this photograph from Shanghai, China shows.
A presentation on AHO technology was made to Chinese regulators at the Stop the Crash! campaign event in Shanghai in October 2017 by Michael Woodford MBE. Mr Woodford is the Executive Chairman of the campaign organisation Safer Roads Foundation which works mainly on safer infrastructure. www.saferroadsfoundation.org
Campaigning for motorcycle AHO will now be added to their work programme.
