UK trade fair Expo 2018 - Industry response to the safety provisions of Euro 4 as they affect the A1 125cc category
Vehicle regulation is planned many years in advance and discussions on the safety aspects that eventually found their way into Euro 4 commenced in 2006 between FIM and the European Transport Safety Council. This led to a 2008 report recommending to the EU Commission a compromise for the 125cc A1 machines. The motorcycle industry advocated for a lower cost option of combined braking for these machines. This is a system where when one brake is operated alone by the rider the other brake will automatically be activated as well.
Now that Euro 4 is in force we see that the industry has not followed this course. Instead it is producing 125cc scooters and motorcycles fitted with anti-lock braking – same as is required for the larger machines. This is a very welcome development.
