United Nations Global Forum for Road Traffic Safety (WP1) 19-23 March 2018
FIM has been active in this UN forum since 1988. The meetings next week will open with a review of the situation for vulnerable road users (including motorcycle riders as well as pedestrians and cyclists) in South East Asia. This was the focus of a conference held in Delhi last year and attended by Chris Hodder a member of the FIM Public Affairs Commission. The UN will look to strengthening its advice to governments through the manual on best practice. – The Consolidated Resolution on Road Traffic. Later in the week the agenda will move to a discussion on the hot topic of the regulation of automated and semi-automated vehicles which is a matter of concern to FIM. More attention is needed to ensure that new technologies are compatible with all road users – not just that cars can interact with other cars and the infrastructure. Claims that sensors which can identify pedestrians and cyclists will “automatically” work to identify motorcycles are not proven.
